Maine Trails Bond Goes to Ballot in November

Governor Mills signs the Maine Trails Bond (LD 1156) into law on Earth Day! Next Stop: to the ballot for voters to decide this November. Thank you for your support!

On Monday, April 22nd, 2024, Governor Janet Mills signed into law the Maine Trails Bond (LD 1156). This bipartisan legislation will place, for the first-time ever, a $30 million trails bond on the November ballot for voters to decide. The bond will provide $30 million in grants over four years to invest in the design, development, and maintenance of trails statewide. These grants will help Maine nonprofits, municipalities, and qualified entities within State Government to improve non-motorized, motorized, and multi-use trails. Grant recipients would be required to produce 10 percent in matching contributions (Sec. 6, Item 4).

At a time when outdoor recreation activities, including on trails, represent a growing segment of Maine’s economy, the Maine Trails Bond has garnered broad, bipartisan support across the state. More than 520 organizations, businesses, and towns have endorsed the Trails Bond.

The Maine Trails Coalition looks forward to a statewide campaign where we will continue to build relationships as we engage the people of Maine about the Maine Trails Bond.

The Maine Trails Bond is an opportunity to make Maine a national leader in recreational and multi-use trails that bolster local economies, strengthen community connections, and improve our quality of life.  From repairing and enhancing existing trails, to designing and building trails that meet today’s sustainable design standards, to improving trails and access for all- this initiative promises to strengthen our outdoor economy and benefit communities in all corners of Maine.
