MTC Blazes the Trail for a Director

The MTC is seeking a visionary, self-motivated leader to serve as our next Director!

This is a unique opportunity to help guide a statewide coalition committed to a bold and hopeful future: one where trails connect communities, inspire stewardship, and enhance Maine’s health, economy, and quality of life.

Rooted in collaboration, MTC brings together landowners, trail organizations, advocates, and businesses to ensure that trails are a shared priority—from local paths to long-distance routes. We envision a Maine where every community has access to a vibrant trail network, supported by strong public investment, broad public appreciation, and an ethic of stewardship grounded in equity and inclusion.

The Director will be a driving force behind this vision, responsible for coordinating coalition activity, engaging partners, shaping statewide trail policy, and advancing key initiatives. This role calls for someone equally comfortable guiding strategy and rolling up their sleeves to manage the day-to-day. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in nonprofit or coalition leadership, fundraising, and building networks that center diverse voices and long-term impact.

Opportunity Overview

This is a part-time (20-24 hrs/week) contract role with flexible hours and a strong degree of autonomy. Working closely with the MTC Leadership Group, the Director will guide the coalition’s strategic priorities: convening stakeholders, catalyzing action, and deepening the impact of Maine’s trail movement. The role includes coordinating member engagement, overseeing public programs, supporting policy efforts, and securing sustainable funding for MTC’s long-term success.

Strong candidates will bring 5–7+ years of relevant experience in nonprofit, advocacy, or consulting roles—ideally with a background in trail development, outdoor access, or community organizing. The Director should be an exceptional communicator and collaborator, skilled in partnership-building, project management, and working in a dynamic environment. Proven success in fundraising, grant writing, and fiscal stewardship is essential, along with the ability to work independently, manage flexible hours, and collaborate remotely.

The Director works in close collaboration with the Leadership Group, reporting to them while also contributing strategic insight, operational expertise, and on-the-ground leadership to move the coalition’s work forward.

Location & Compensation
This is a remote position, but the contractor must be based in Maine. Compensation is $30,000-40,000 annually, depending on experience. Travel expenses are reimbursed, and the contractor must provide their own workspace and equipment. This is a one-year contract with strong potential for renewal based on funding and performance.

Our Commitment
Maine Trails Coalition values equity, inclusivity, and authentic community partnerships. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds who share our passion for trails, stewardship, and connection. If you're excited to help shape a stronger, more connected Maine through trails, we’d love to hear from you!
